Our Spotlight on
Virtual Quilt Market

As you read this, we are coming upon the date of March 12. It’s not quite the Ides of March, but it will be roughly a year since the entire world had to alter everyday life and utterly change in the Time of the Pandemic (et tu, COVID?).

People have suffered enormously and in so many ways, and in that realistic light, the cancellation of live events—including Quilt Market—is inconsequential by comparison. But as the upcoming months go by, conditions improve, and the vaccines roll out, we are going full steam ahead planning live, in-person fall editions of both Quilt Market (Oct. 23-25) and Quilt Festival (Oct. 28-31) at our usual home of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. How those shows will look and feel may very well be different with any federal, state, local, or GRB guidelines. But we will be very, very happy to be back with everyone as the “quilting peeps” reconvene again!

In the meantime, Virtual Quilt Market will be held March 23-25, and will include many familiar aspects of our in-person event. That includes exhibitor booths, Schoolhouse Series, Take & Teach classes, and Business Seminars.

Making their debut (in response to your suggestions) is a track of Legal Seminars and a special presentation, “Quilting Trends Today 2021.” It will be presented by Mark Hyland, CEO of Premier Needle Arts. It will present and discuss the results of their most recent Quilters’ Survey and offer demographic information on quilt consumers and their habits, as well as what that means in today’s business climate. There will also be time for an audience Q&A.

So this edition of eInsider is all about VQM! We talk with Business Seminar presenter and American Quilt Retailer head honcho Heidi Kaisand about adapting your business to the “new normals” and changing some ingrained thinking. Legal Seminar presenter and Tulane University Law Professor Dr. Elizabeth Gard discusses why copyright and trademark law is so important for quilt artists and businesses—and constantly changing! We chat with Cliff Quibell, Daryl Cohen, and Adam Weinstein from Andover Fabrics about the company’s 100th anniversary, history, and a preview of their Premier Schoolhouse. And finally, New Product Spotlight showcases just a few of the new items that will make their debut in “virtual booths” at VQM!

We at Quilt Market hope that everyone reading this—whether you’re involved with Quilt Market or not—stays safe and healthy and physically and mentally well. And here’s to a much better 2021!
