WHAT’S TRENDING: THE JUNGLE, SAVANNA, AND FARAWAY LANDS
Among the new products and trends we spotted at the recent spring Quilt Market in Kansas City were a healthy dose of fabric collections and patterns inspired by the flora and fauna of the jungle, the African savanna, the Island of Madagascar, and places that live only in the imagination.
ETHEREAL JUNGLE FROM CLOUD9 FABRICS
This recent collection from designer Elizabeth Olwen offers a dreamy take on jungle flora and fauna in soothing shades of green and pink. The collection includes a variety of botanical designs—vines, dragonfruit, a damask-inspired tropical print, and even a “Botanical Babes” print—as well as “Jungle Cats” and other small creatures.
URBAN JUNGLE
FROM PAINTBRUSH STUDIO FABRICS
New from artist/designer Fernanda Martinez, Urban Jungle collection features a vibrant mix of tropical leaves, palm fronds, painterly florals, and leopard spots in a bold color palette of green, cyan, mustard, and wine. The collection also includes two pre-quilted fabric prints.
UNDER THE CANOPY FROM RILEY BLAKE DESIGNS
This upcoming (ships in August 2019) collection from Citrus & Mint Designs includes an assortment of jungle-themed prints featuring leopards, sloths, storks, snakes, and toucans, jungle plants and flowers, and coordinating geometric patterns.
SELVA FROM ART GALLERY FABRICS
New from AGF Studio (shipping in August 2019), Selva features moody-hued designs inspired by the “lush jungles of Central America” and “fierce fauna of the African savanna.” Prints include a mix of creatures—sloths, big cats, and elephants—as well as coordinating small and geometric patterns.
TROPICAL ZONE FROM BLANK QUILTING
New from Color Pop Studio, Tropical Zone (shipping in October 2019) includes lush, colorful designs featuring sloths, parrots, and other rainforest creatures, as well as tropical flowers, leaves, and coordinating stripe prints.
TREE HUGGERS FROM BLEND FABRICS
Sloths also make an appearance in this playful upcoming (shipping January 2020) collection from designer Maude Asbury. In addition to the slow, arboreal mammals, Tree Huggers also features fellow tree-loving Koalas among its designs, as well as coordinating floral and foliage prints.
MONKEY WRENCH FROM FREESPIRIT FABRICS
The latest collection from designer Tula Pink, Monkey Wrench (shipping September 2019) “tells the story of a mischievous monkey named Bananas.” In addition to the collection’s main print, Monkey Wrench also includes—naturally—a variety of banana designs, botanicals, lady-bug dots, and a small geometric pattern.
If you look closely at the title print from this upcoming collection (shipping in August 2019), you’ll spot both monkeys and birds amid the intricate design, but the real focus is on the gorgeous folk-art-inspired florals. Maya also includes colorful floral coordinates and a tone-on-tone vine print.
ADVENTURE FROM ROBERT KAUFMAN FABRICS
This new collection (shipping in September 2019) from designer Elizabeth Hartman features flowers, leaves, geometrics, and—the star of the show—adorable lemur prints, all in Hartman’s signature style and color range. And the coordinating Lana Lemur quilt pattern (also designed by Hartman) features rows of loveable lemurs with eye-catching striped tails.
ENCHANTED KINGDOM FROM BIRCH FABRICS
The upcoming Enchanted Kingdom collection includes a fun mix of animals—both real and imagined—among its whimsical prints. Featured creatures include big cats, elephants, rabbits, deer, unicorns, and dragons in densely illustrated, modern designs and colors.
MYSTICAL LAND FROM ART GALLERY FABRICS
Inspired by mythology, astrology, and dreams, this new collection from designer Maureen Cracknell includes dusk-hued floral, lattice, geometric, astral-, and lunar-inspired prints among its designs. The collection’s “Mirror Lake” print also features silhouetted bears, deer, birds, and—yes—unicorns.
ENCHANTED UNICORNS
FROM ROBERT KAUFMAN FABRICS
Unicorns remain a popular motif, as evidenced by a number of new collections we spied at spring Quilt Market. The new Enchanted Unicorns (shipping in October 2019) fabric from Robert Kaufman offers a straight-forward take on the theme—classic unicorns with rainbow manes that have a distinctly '80s-inspired vintage vibe.
MAGICAL RAINBOW UNICORNS
FROM ROBERT KAUFMAN FABRICS
Also new and unicorn-themed from Robert Kaufman: Magical Rainbow Unicorns by design duo Hello!Lucky. The collection includes two fun panel prints: One with various unicorn-and-friend scenes, and a cut-and-sew panel for creating unicorn plushies.
New from Katie Webb Design, the Shine Bright collection is all things happy and whimsical—rainbow-hued unicorns, hearts, lucky horseshoes, and a “Love” text print. The collection’s panel print also includes playful and positive affirmations in—naturally—a rainbow of colors.
THE UNICORN ABSTRACTIONS QUILT
FROM VIOLET CRAFT
Of all of the unicorns—and quilts!—we spotted at spring Quilt Market, the one that most caught our attention was the new Unicorn Abstractions quilt from designer Violet Craft. This multi-option foundation paper pieced project includes directions to create either a unicorn or a horse. Pictured using Violet Craft’s Modern Classics for Robert Kaufman.
