WHAT’S TRENDING: SEWING AS DESIGN
Design trends in the industry may come and go, but sewing-themed designs, naturally, never go out of style! For this edition of “What’s Trending,” we’re highlighting recent fabric collections and patterns with designs that celebrate the fundamentals of sewing and a whole lot more. Caution: “Sew” many sewing puns ahead…
MY HAPPY PLACE FROM RILEY BLAKE DESIGNS
This new collection by designer Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet features a variety of vintage-inspired sewing icons (main print), vintage button cards, and even vintage “ladies.” My Happy Place also includes coordinating floral, gingham, and quilt block prints, plus a label panel featuring awesomely retro quilt label designs that can be cut out and added to a quilt.
SEW CHATTY FROM RILEY BLAKE DESIGNS
Also from Riley Blake Designs, the upcoming Sew Chatty collection (shipping March 2020) by Kelli Fannin features two clever prints—a patchwork grid and a toss, each filled with sewing-themed puns and designs.
DIY FROM FIGO (A DIVISION OF NORTHCOTT)
This upcoming collection (in stores May 2020) from designer Amy Van Luijk offers a clean, modern take on the sewing and crafting theme. Designs include sewing-related notions, crafting items, pencils, spools of thread, and coordinating prints featuring simple geometric designs.
Fans of Alison Glass’ Handcrafted collections will adore this latest batik-style offering. Stitched includes—naturally—both cross-stich and running-stitch designs, as well as the bee-themed “Hive” print and a floral print interspersed with a scissor motif.
SEW EXCITED FROM KANVAS STUDIO/BENARTEX
This recent collection from designer Andi Metz features all things sewing—notions, forms, spools of thread, buttons, machines, and even a sewing-themed text print. The collection’s colorful designs are set against black, white, and (select prints) turquoise.
A STITCH IN TIME FROM WINDHAM FABRICS
New from Whistler Studios, the A Stich in Time collection includes pastel-hued vintage sewing designs—including notions, pattern drafts, and other items against a patchwork of fabric swatches. A Stitch in Time also includes a small-print floral and a ric-rac-inspired stripe.
SEW LET’S STITCH FROM HENRY GLASS & CO.
The latest collection from designer Sandy Lee, Sew Let’s Stitch features adorable sewing-themed stripe, patchwork, and toss prints featuring antique sewing machines, spools and thimbles, “Quilted Houses,” and a sewing-related text pattern.
STITCH HAPPENS AND SEW BIG OR GO HOME QUILT PATTERNS FROM KELLI FANNIN QUILTS
Both of these delightful patterns from designer Kelli Fannin feature a large-scale sewing machine design. Stitch Happens is a modern sampler-style wallhanging (37” x 40”) that uses simple patchwork techniques. Sew Big or Go Home is also a modern sampler quilt (finished size 63” x 71”) made using traditional techniques and straight seams.
FEATHERWEIGHT COLLAGE PATTERN FROM FIBERWORKS
This recent pattern from Fiberworks designer Laura Heine offers a different take on the sewing-machine quilt. This 26” x 32” pattern features a Featherweight machine created in Heine’s signature collage style.
MY FIRST SEWING MACHINE QUILT PATTERN FROM PACIFIC RIM QUILT COMPANY
This two-fabric appliqué quilt pattern features the silhouette of a Featherweight sewing machine and pincushion against a colorful background fabric. Like all of Pacific Rim Quilt Company’s patterns, the quilt is created by laying the appliqué fabric on top of the background fabric and cutting away parts of the appliqué fabric to create the design.
FLOCK OF SINGERS QUILT PATTERN FROM MATERIAL GIRLFRIENDS
This cleverly titled quilt pattern features an Andy Warhol-esque design of repeating Featherweight sewing machines. The pattern offers options for two sizes— wallhanging (36” x 36”) and a second layout runner option (24” x 48”)—and can be created from just 10 fat quarters.
