MARCH

WHAT’S TRENDING: SPRING SHOWERS

We’re inching toward spring—the first day of which is March 20, to be exact. And as the saying goes, “March winds and April showers bring May flowers.”

Okay, that might be up for debate, depending upon the part of the world in which you reside. But thinking about spring has got us thinking about those playing-in-the-rain, jumping-in-puddles kind of days we loved as children.

So, for this edition of “What’s Trending,” we sought out fabrics and patterns that capture the essence (and happiness!) of a good spring rainy day.

Let’s start with the adorable Rainy Day Quilt Pattern from Pen + Paper Patterns, which offers a modern take on the traditional Drunkard’s Path block. Although an intermediate-level pattern, the quilt’s fun design—an oversized cloud and raindrops—is a great way to learn or practice sewing curves.

Laundry Basket Quilts’ Dancing Umbrella Quilt Pattern offers a slightly more traditional take on the theme. The quilt—which was introduced several years ago, but remains popular—includes 30 appliqué umbrella blocks, placed so that they “dance” on the quilt. The appliqué can be completed using hand, machine, or fused methods.

Though Dancing Umbrella includes paper appliqué patterns, the umbrellas could also be made using the GO! Dancing Umbrella Die from Accuquilt, and designed by Laundry Basket’s Edyta Sitar. The die can also be used to create the umbrellas for Sitar’s GO! Spring Showers Table Runner Pattern.

The Raindrops Quilt Pattern from Me and My Sister Designs is part of a two-quilt pattern PDF, which also includes Go Fish! Both quilts can be made using a single layer cake. The Raindrops quilt features repeating rows of patterned—yes—raindrops!

Both quilts were created using Me and My Sister Designs’ colorful Rainy Day fabric collection for Moda, which shipped earlier this year. In addition to playful umbrella prints, the Rainy Day collection also includes paisleys, stripes, swirls, and even fish.

Another recent fabric collection that includes umbrellas among its prints is the beautifully hued Charleston from Art Gallery Fabrics. In addition to its “Rainbrella” print, the collection features a variety of designs inspired by the historic South Carolina city—Magnolias, garden florals, pineapples, and an ode to Charleston architecture.

Cloud9 Fabrics upcoming Spring Quartet collection by Jessica Jones celebrates all of the things that make spring sweet, including florals, fruits, and yes, spring showers. Each of the collection’s prints—including the rain-themed “Droplet”—is available in corduroy only.

The recent Puddle Play collection from Michael Miller Fabrics is available in both flannel and minky and features kid-inspired designs like “Puddle Play” (adorable animals with umbrellas), “Happy Clouds,” and “Pennant Party.” The collection is available in Pink Combo and Blue Combo, and ideal for baby-related projects.

Our list wouldn’t be complete without the When Skies Are Grey collection by Simple Simon and Company for Riley Blake, which the company first introduced at last year’s spring Market. The collection includes delightfully simple raincloud, raindrop, and umbrella prints in a minimal color palette of black, white, pink, blue, and the occasional pop of gold. Selected prints are also available in double gauze and knit.
